Wrist Injuries At Work
Wrist injuries in the workplace occur most often following a slip, trip and fall accident. When a person is falling towards the ground or on to an object, their natural instinct is to attempt to break the fall by extending their hands and arms in front of them to bear the brunt of the impact. Depending on the distance of the fall and force of impact, the wrist is likely to be the area that sustains the immediate injury. Another common of wrist injury at work is when an object falling from height, or a heavy piece of machinery strikes the wrist. Wrist injuries can be very serious, in that the wrist controls the hands, and loss of function in this area can prohibit an injured person from undertaking both work (especially where a job requires manual handling) and most regular everyday activities.
Types of Wrist Injury
The wrist is a relatively complex joint, with eight individual bones held together by ligaments. Due to this wrist injuries vary widely in their severity. Wrist injuries range from minor sprains and torn ligaments through to dislocations and fractures / breaks. One of the worst types of break is what is known as a spiral fracture, where essentially the break runs in a spiral pattern right the way up the bone, necessitating many months in plaster, and normally the insertion of plates and pins. There are also various complications that can set in in the months and years following the initial injury. Vascular disruption for example will prevent a fracture from fully healing, while osteoarthritis may also develop in the injured joint over the medium term.
Long Term Wrist Conditions
There are also various types of wrist damage sustained in the workplace related to 'Repetitive Strain Injury' (RSI). This occurs where damage to muscles, tendons and tissues in the wrist accumulates, as workers make repetitive movements over a long period of time. It may also be caused by other factors such as poor work station ergonomics, poor posture on the part of the worker, pressure and stress. Specific conditions include Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, commonly associated with over-use of computer keyboards, and Tendonitis. These conditions may lead to permanent nerve damage and long-term symptoms including loss of grip, ongoing pain, and decreased mobility and coordination in the forearm and shoulder.
Wrist Injury Compensation Awards
Wrist injury compensation awards will rise to £38,250 where there is a complete and ongoing loss of function in the wrist. A serious permanent disability in the wrist where some useful movement still remains will result in compensation awards of between £15,750 and £25,000. Where the level of permanent disability is less severe, such as persisting pain and stiffness but general useful movement, compensations will be between £8,000 and £15,750. An injured person with an uncomplicated Colles (distal radius) fracture will be awarded in the region of £4,750. For a minor, undisplaced or minimally displaced fracture and soft tissue injuries from which a full of virtual recovery is made within a matter of months, wrist injury compensation awards will be between £2,250 and £3,000. Where recovery from this final category of wrist injury takes longer but is complete, awards will rarely exceed £6,500. It is important to remember that these compensation award estimates reflect compensation for the actual injury itself, and do not include other factors for which an injured person may be compensated, including loss of earnings and the cost of medical treatment.
