Shoulder Pain Compensation Claims
Read our introduction to: Shoulder Injuries At Work >>
Shoulder pain is common in working environments where goods and loads are regularly handled by workers. Lifting and transporting of awkward and heavy loads in confined spaces at work often causes chronic shoulder pain. The shoulder is an incredibly mobile and powerful joint. It is however particularly susceptible to injury, due to its complex structure, and the physical demands placed on it. Most people who spend their working day in front of a computer screen will have experienced shoulder pain and stiffness at some point (see below). This is due to the fact that it is easy to slouch or hunch over the screen, placing constant tension on muscles in the shoulders.
Typical Causes Of Shoulder Pain At Work
Shoulder Pain From Repetitive Strain At Work
Repetitive strain injuries result from the overuse of the shoulder, causing shoulder pain and damage to the joint. Any strenuous activity may cause shoulder pain, a cook repetitively stirring dishes, or a meat worker chopping up meat for example. Factory workers may perform thousands of small repetitive motions each day, with accumulating strain in the shoulders, as may nurses and cleaning staff. Employers have a duty to provide a safe system of work for their employees, that minimises the risk of shoulder pain among staff. This includes risk assessing working practices, particularly ergonomic factors, and ensuring workers take adequate breaks from repetitive tasks.
Shoulder Pain From Poor Posture & Workstation Ergonomics
Probably the most common cause of shoulder pain at work in the 21st century is the posture office workers adopt in front of computer screens, and the length of time they spend in the same position. This may be the result of poor workstation ergonomics, such as when office chairs are non-adjustable, or when computers screens are mounted too high, causing users to strain their shoulders when viewing them. Often employers are to blame in this context for their failure to provide workstations or other equipment that is ergonomically safe for employees to use.
The Benefits Of Using A Firm Of No Win No Fee Solicitors
Long Term Effects Of Shoulder Pain
Prolonged shoulder pain can have a number of consequences, including loss of mobility in the joint, causing difficulties for a person in performing routine tasks and sleeping. Shoulder pain can also cause loss of employment in extreme circumstances, where a worker can no longer perform their role to their former capacity. Pain, irritation and discomfort in the shoulder may also persist or become permanent. Rotator cuff damage for example may cause stiffness, pain and loss of mobility in the shoulder for around 6 months, with residual weakness in the joint meaning that similar future injuries are likely. The condition known as frozen shoulder meanwhile, can involve ongoing chronic pain and permanent loss of mobility in the shoulder.
