Warehouse Accident Compensation
Warehouses are known to be dangerous places to work, due mainly to the constant traffic of goods entering, leaving and being stored. Apart from the risks involved in handling heavy goods, warehouses are often highly mechanised, with a variety of work vehicles and machinery in use. Many warehouses also have strict supply contracts with retailers and others clients. This adds to time pressure on workers in what is already an environment fraught with hazards. Health and Safety Executive (HSE) figures for 2009/10 reported over 8,500 work related accidents in the storage, warehousing and road haulage industries, of which around 1,600 of the resulting injuries were classified as major.
What Causes Accidents In Warehouses?
Typical Injuries From Warehouse Accidents
Manual handling accidents commonly result in injuries to the upper body. Such injuries can be simple bruises, strains and sprains, or more serious dislocations and fractures. Where items fall from height, workers be struck on the head and injured. Workers who themselves fall from height while stacking or storing goods often sustain arm, wrist and hand injuries, as they seek to break their fall. More simple slips and falls, on spilled liquids or a recently cleaned floor for example, may cause injuries of varying severity. Serious injuries are likely if worker is struck by a forklift truck, another piece of warehouse machinery or a heavy item falling from height.
The Benefits Of Using A Firm Of No Win No Fee Solicitors
Warehouse Accident Compensation Claims
Employers have a duty of care to provide a reasonably safe system of work and working premises for employees at all times. Machinery and tools must be adequately maintained and suitable for the job in hand. Workers must be provided with appropriate personal protective equipment, such as safety helmets where necessary, and should not be required to lift or carry excessive amounts of weight by hand. Employers must further ensure that workers are properly trained in how to perform their job. Employers may also be held liable for injuries caused by co-workers. Failure in any of these areas may lead to a compensation claim against the employer on behalf of an injured worker.
