Shoulder Injury Compensation Claims

| More

Damage to the shoulder is the second most common form of injury among workers engaged in manual handling, after back injuries. The ball and socket arrangement of the shoulder bones allows the joint to bear considerable strain and pressure, as well as facilitating its powers of rotation. However, the shoulder is also a complicated joint, made up of 3 bones, supported and stabilised by groups of muscles, tendons and ligaments. This complex structure, and the amount of strain that a worker will often place on their shoulders during the course of a shift, make the joint particularly susceptible to injury. Employers are expected to take all reasonable measures to reduce the incidence of such injuries among workers to the lowest possible level.

Types Of Shoulder Injury Caused By Work

  • Pain, Sprains and Strains

  • Shoulder Dislocations

  • Humerus and Scapula Fractures

  • Rotator Cuff Tears

  • Frozen Shoulder
  • Shoulder Injuries From Lifting At Work

Shoulder injuries at work are most often the result of manual handling accidents, as well as slips, trips and falls on the premises. The lifting and transporting of heavy loads by hand applies pressure to the shoulder joint. Where the load is excessive, the lifting is continuous, or an awkward lifting posture is adopted, injuries to workers may result. The responsibilities of employers in this area are laid out in the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992. Lifting by hand and similar tasks should be avoided wherever possible, or otherwise most be comprehensively risk assessed. The regulations provide strict limits on the amount of weight that can be lifted and transported by hand based on a variety of factors.

Shoulder Injuries From Falls At Work

Falls are common among those working regularly at height, and in hectic working environments, such as on busy construction sites, or on factory production lines. Where a person takes the impact of fall directly on the shoulder, there is a high chance they will suffer a dislocation, where the ball of the shoulder is separated from the socket. Shoulder dislocations are often complicated by torn muscles, tendons and ligaments. Tears to the rotator cuff group of muscles and tendons in the shoulder can takes months to heal, as the rotator cuff stabilises the shoulder, and, as its name implies, is essential to its mobility and rotation. In these instances, arthroscopic surgery will often be required to repair the damage.

Long Term Work Related Shoulder Conditions

Tears to muscles, tendons and ligaments in the shoulder may result in inflammation and scar tissue forming around the joint. This can contribute to the onset of frozen shoulder, a potentially incurable long-term condition that causes ongoing pain, discomfort and loss of mobility frozen shoulder may also be classified as a repetitive strain injury, if for example is has been caused by exposure to vibrating equipment, or excessive repetitive movements that place small but continual strain on the shoulder in the course of work.
