Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) Claims
Repetitive Strain Injury Compensation >>
Repetitive strain injury or RSI, also known by a variety of other terms, is an umbrella definition for a host of musculoskeletal and nerve disorders, normally affecting the upper body, caused by excessive repetition of certain physical tasks over time. RSI results from prolonged periods of muscular tension, without enough recovery time in between them. It involves inflammation and damage to the muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves in the upper body. An RSI condition will normally resolve itself with rest, and avoidance of the activity that originally caused it. In more severe cases it can lead to permanent loss of strength and mobility, amounting to disability.
What Causes Repetitive Strain Injury At Work?
Common Symptoms Of Repetitive Strain Injury
Those suffering from RSI may experience tension in the shoulders and arms, stiffness in the neck, and upper back pain with associated headaches. Otherwise RSI symptoms may include pain, tingling sensations and numbness in the hands, elbows and wrists (common from excessive computer work). The symptoms are not necessarily constant, and are more likely to get worse while the repetitive action is being undertaken, as well as at night. Over the long term RSI can cause permanent loss of endurance, mobility, coordination and strength in the upper body.
Industries Affected By Repetitive Strain Injury
Any worker engaged in an activity that requires repetitive movement of the body such as computer use, factory production line or routine office work, can be at danger of developing RSI. From a chef repetitively chopping vegetables in a kitchen, to a nurse turning patients in the course of a shift, or a cellist performing nightly in an orchestra, a wide variety of professionals face specific risks of RSI in the course of their work. Recent research suggests RSI may be much more prevalent among office workers than previously supposed, and that over two thirds may be suffering from some form of the condition at any one time.
The Benefits Of Using A Firm Of No Win No Fee Solicitors
Repetitive Strain Injury Compensation
It is an employer's responsibility to ensure that health and safety risks to employees are identified, evaluated and that all possible measures are taken to reduce the risk of repetitive strain injury among workers. Employers duties are governed by a number of workplace regulations, in particular The Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1992 and The Health & Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992. A successful RSI claim can lead to substantial damages, reflecting a range of factors, including pain and suffering, the cost of conventional or complementary medical treatment and loss of earnings.
