Neck injuries are one of the most common forms of work related injury, and result in high levels of absenteeism from work. Injuries to the neck may not seem initially serious, but due to the neck's sensitivity and the important body functions that it controls, any neck condition can swiftly deteriorate and spread to affect other parts of the body. The neck's critical role is to connect the brain to the rest of the body via nerve signals sent between the two, and to control the body's movements via the spine. Due to this the severity of neck injuries varies enormously. A mild case of whiplash may clear up in a day or two. Damage to the spinal cord however may result in permanent paralysis in extreme cases.
Typical Neck Problems Caused By Work
What Causes Neck Injuries At Work?
Strains and sprains to soft tissues in the neck are often the result of whiplash sustained in road vehicle accidents, though they may also be caused by physically-demanding tasks carried out at work. Trauma to the neck or upper back may be the result of heavy lifting (or similar manual handling tasks), where sudden excessive tension causes injury, or may be the the outcome of a slip, trip or fall accident. Otherwise neck injuries may be caused by cumulative trauma to the soft tissues and vertebrae in the neck, such as when a worker adopts a poor posture for lengthy periods, or if repetitive manual tasks have not been ergonomically risk assessed.
Duties Of Employers To Prevent Neck Injuries Among Workers
Lifting, handling and transporting of heavy loads at work is a regular cause of neck injuries, and employers must ensure that their workers are provided with proper training in how to carry out such tasks safely. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 sets detailed limits on weights that can be moved by hand in the workplace. Wherever possible, workers should not be required to undertake manual handling operations at work which involve the risk of injury. Where such work is unavoidable, ergonomic risk assessments of each task must be carried out, and an appropriate level of training and supervision must be provided.
