Head Injury Compensation Awards >>
Head and brain injuries vary widely in their severity. A hit to the head can cause no damage at all, or else result in superficial injuries, such as cuts, bruises and headaches. A harder hit to the head however can cause any number of conditions, including brain damage and permanent disability. With a severe head injury you may be unable to work for an extended period of time, or ever again, and will be likely to require a great deal of ongoing care and support. In such circumstances, head injury claims can be of the utmost importance, and may result in very substantial sums of compensation being awarded.
Typical Causes Of Head Injuries At Work
Every year over a million people attend hospital with a head injury. Around 135,000 of those are subsequently admitted. In the workplace, head injuries are especially common on construction sites, and result mainly from
falls from height (for example falls from ladders, scaffolding and roofs), being struck by objects falling from height and falls from machinery and vehicles. Your employer has a duty to risk assess all aspects of your employment and reduce the risk of accidents occurring to the lowest level possible. Employers should provide adequate personal protective equipment in the form of hard hats, and make sure that workers wear them if a task involves a head injury risk.
The Benefits Of Using A Firm Of No Win No Fee Solicitors
Head Injuries Can Cause Brain Damage
The brain is made up of around 100 billion nerve cells. Even mild head injuries can result in damage to a portion of these nerve cells, support cells and blood vessels around them. If the connections between these groups of nerve cells are severed or stretched, parts of the brain may have difficulty communicating with other parts. With more serious head injuries the vessels in the brain may be bleeding, or the brain may be swelling due to the accumulation of fluid and pressure, potentially culminating in permanent brain damage or death.
The Ongoing Effects Of Head Injuries
The effects of a head injury can be negligible or life changing, both for the victim and for those around them. Such injuries may result in either temporary or permanent mental impairment. Victims may experience memory loss, lapses in concentration, and increased sensitivity to light or noise. They will also be more prone to anxiety, depression and other personality disorders. Physical symptoms may include regular headaches, dizziness and speech impairment. In serious cases of brain damage victims may be confined to a wheelchair, or remain in a coma for an extended period of time.
