Electrical Accident Compensation

| More

Injuries resulting from contact with electrical currents can affect workers in any profession, not just electricians and those who regularly handle electrical equipment. In most industries electric shocks a common form of accident, though in the construction and utilities industries, electrical burns are more prevalent. Accidents of this kind can be relatively minor, or have profound consequences, including disability and disfigurement. They may also cause ongoing psychological trauma, and illnesses including depression. Figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) report over 1,000 major electrical accidents in 2009/10, with around 30 fatalities recorded each year.

What Causes Electrical Accidents?

Building and construction workers face multiple risks of shocks and burns from electrical accidents, though one or more of these risks will be present in almost every industry:

  • Contact with live power cables e.g. when digging foundations or using pneumatic drills.

  • Contact between overhead power cables and machinery or scaffolding poles.

  • Contact with old or defective electrical wiring e.g. during renovation work.

  • Contact with defective electric appliances, equipment or tools.

  • Contact with electricity and a conductive substance e.g. water.
  • Typical Injuries From Electrical Accidents

The HSE highlights electric shocks, electrical burns, loss of muscle control and thermal burns as the most common injuries affecting workers. Any contact with high voltages, or contact longer than a few seconds with lower voltages, may cause both external and internal burn injuries. As a current passes through the body it heats up skin and soft tissues, while also disrupting messages between the brain and the body's muscles. This is what causes muscles spasms which can result in a person being unable to release themselves from the source of the current.

Contact with high voltage electrical currents will often induce loss of muscle control and violent physical convulsions, resulting in injuries such as sprains, dislocations and fractures. The most serious types of electrical accidents may render a person unconscious, inhibit respiratory functions, cause damage to the body's internal organs or lead to cardiac arrest. There is a further risk of secondary injuries resulting from falls if a person is electrocuted while working at height, or is propelled backwards by the force of the shock.

  • Electrical Accident Compensation Claims

Employers face a range of responsibilities to workers in relation to electrical equipment and potential hazards. Essentially they should avoid exposing employees to the risk of an electrical accident wherever possible. Electrical equipment must be well designed, properly maintained, regularly inspected, and appropriate to the work bring undertaken. Employees should be fully trained in the safe use of such equipment. Protective equipment such as insulated footwear and heavy gloves must be provided where exposure to electrical currents is unavoidable. Failure in any of these areas may amount to negligence on the part of the employer in the event of an accident or injury.
