Employee Injured After Slipping On Grapes At Supermarket
Case Study - Ms Bryant
Ms Bryant was employed as a checkout girl at her local branch of a national supermarket chain. One evening as she was collecting her belongings from her locker, she slipped on a grape, and fell awkwardly, with her ankle trapped under her knee. A colleague had unwittingly spilled some grapes on the floor, and they had been crushed, causing Ms Bryant to slip over them and injure herself. Ms Bryant was taken to hospital where doctors found that she had severely strained muscles in her knee, hip and ankle. She was kept in overnight, was able to go home on crutches the next day. She was off work for 2 weeks, and required assistance from her sister during that period.
Our Legal Advice
Ms Bryant got in touch with Bartletts Solicitors and asked how can I claim compensation for slipping on a grape at a supermarket. We advised her that she had a strong claim against the supermarket, and took on her case. Her employer had failed to provide a safe place and system of work. It emerged that supermarket staff were aware of the crushed fruit, and cleaning staff had been called. Despite, this, half an hour after the spillage, Ms Bryant slipped and injured herself. This was clearly a failure of the supermarket’s system of inspection and cleaning. Her employer accepted liability for the accident, and Ms Bryant was awarded £2,750 in compensation for her injuries.
