Read our introduction to: Shoulder Injuries At Work >>

Rotator cuff tears are one of the most common types of shoulder injury, especially in the workplace. The rotator cuff is made up of a group of four tendons and various muscles surrounding the shoulder joint. The rotator cuff provides the joint with strength and stability, and controls its range of mobility, particularly rotation. Rotator cuff tears can cause serious functional impairment in both the working and domestic life for an injured person. With the most severe 'full thickness' rotator cuff tears, arthroscopic (keyhole) or open surgery may be required to repair the damage. A residual weakness in the shoulder may also persist.

Symptoms Of Rotator Cuff Tears

A rotator cuff tear normally refers to a supraspinatus tendon (32% of partial tears) followed by the infraspinatus tendon (30%). Rotator cuff tears are defined medically as either partial (minor) thickness or full (complete) thickness, representing the extent of the damage done to the tendon. When tendons in the rotator cuff are torn they become inflamed, and scar tissue forms around the shoulder joint, causing stiffness and loss of mobility. Apart from reduced movement, an injured person is likely to experience pain and weakness when lifting the arm above shoulder level, or extending it. Pain is worse at night, often causing sleeping difficulties that may persist for weeks or months.

What Causes Rotator Cuff Tears At Work?

  • Heavy and Repetitive Lifting and Carrying (also Pulling, Pushing, Supporting)

  • Repetitive Strain From Poor Posture, Workplace Ergonomics, Stress, Vibrations

  • Slips, Trips, Falls and Vehicle Collisions
  • Rotator Cuff Tears From Falls & Lifting At Work

Among workers under 40 years of age, rotator cuff tears are normally the result of a sudden traumatic injury caused by an accident in the workplace. This may be a fall at work where the impact on landing has been directly sustained by the shoulder or hands. Lifting at work is another common cause of rotator cuff tears, especially when loads are being lifted, carried or supported above shoulder level. Lifting injuries occur most often in environments where workers are asked to carry excessively heavy or awkward loads, and where such weights are lifted in confined spaces.

Rotator Cuff Tears From Repetitive Strain At Work

Overuse of the shoulder can also cause repetitive strain injuries to develop in the joint, including torn rotator cuffs from deterioration in the strength and flexibility of the tendons over time. Poor posture may also place strain on the muscles and tendons in the shoulder, damaging them progressively. Given the many potential causes of this type of injury it is not surprising that our lawyers are often asked; can I claim compensation for a rotator cuff tear caused by my work? The answer is usually yes. However, every case is different and we advise that you contact one of our work injury solicitors for specialist legal advice that you can rely upon.

  • Responsibilities Of Employers To Prevent Rotator Cuff Tears

Health and Safety legislation requires employers to take all reasonable measures to minimise the risk of accidents and injuries in the workplace. They must provide a safe premises for workers, as well as enforce a safe system of work. Manual handling tasks must be risk assessed, and there are strict weight limits and other prohibitions regarding loads that may be lifted and carried by workers. Workers must also be fully trained in safe lifting techniques. Where work is repetitive, management must ensure that workers take adequate breaks, and are not required to work excessively long shifts. Workplace ergonomics must also be assessed by management to minimise the risks posed by repetitive strain injuries.
