Read our introduction to: Wrist Injuries At Work >>
A broken wrist is a painful and debilitating injury, and in the most serious cases may require months of rehabilitation and time off work. Many people break their wrists every year in the UK, often due to a slip, trip or fall from height at work. Others may fall and break their wrists at a commercial premises such as in a shop or car park. Whatever the scenario, any heavy fall may cause a broken wrist, as it is a natural protective reaction by people to seek to break a fall using their hands. The force of the impact is therefore sustained primarily by the wrists. The two most common types of wrist fracture are:
Colles Fractures
The most common form of broken wrist injury, where the break is across the end of the radius bone (the main bone in the forearm). Colles fractures are either displaced (the ends of the broken bone are separated) or nondisplaced (the bone remains in one piece).
Scaphoid Fractures
A break in one of the eight carpal bones located between the wrist and thumb. Scaphoid fractures can be extremely difficult to detect at an early stage as the break may initially be tiny, but will normally widen over the days and weeks following an accident. In other cases a Scaphoid fracture may pass completely unnoticed for many years.
Broken Wrist Treatment & Complications
Treatment for a broken wrist normally involves a cast or splint being applied to the joint, holding the bones in the correct position during the healing process. Severe Colles fractures may require surgery to reset the bones, and possibly the insertion of plates, pins and screws. The healing process in such cases will be prolonged over many months. There are also various complications which may affect an injured person's recovery from a broken wrist, including the possible onset of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, where nerves in the hand have become damaged.
Broken Wrist Accidents At Work
Those who work at height run the highest risk of falls and broken wrist injuries. Workers may fall off ladders and scaffolding, or through insecure structures such as roofs. These accidents may result from various factors, including lack of training, lack of supervision and defective equipment (e.g. faulty scaffolding or an unsecured ladder). Seemingly minors slip and trip accidents also cause broken wrists, especially when a person falls at an unnatural angle, forcing the wrist out of position. Ice and snow are responsible for many of these types of accident in winter, though a recently cleaned wet floor may pose a similar hazard in any workplace.
Further Causes Of Broken Wrist Accidents At Work
Other accidents at work that causing broken wrist injuries include objects (e.g. tools, materials) falling from height and landing on a worker's forearm. These incidents are common in the construction and maintenance industries. Where heavy machinery is in use at warehouses, factories and in other industrial settings, the risk of very severe multiple wrist fractures exists if a worker's arm becomes trapped in a machine, or is crushed between two hard surfaces.

How Much Compensation For A Broken Wrist?
The two most common questions from clients are can I claim compensation for a broken wrist, and if so how much compensation can I claim? Broken wrist compensation awards depend on a number of factors, most notably the physical extent of the injury, and the effect that it has on an injured person's life and prospects. For a minor fracture where a full or virtual recovery is made within a few months, awards will be in the region of £3,000. Colles fractures are deemed more serious and will lead to awards of around £4,750. In the most serious cases involving permanent disability, and complete loss of function in the wrist, awards may rise to £38,250.
