Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), is a medical condition in which the shoulder capsule (made up of connective soft tissues surrounding the ball and socket shoulder joint) becomes inflamed. This in turn causes scar tissue to form around and inside the shoulder capsule, resulting in pain, stiffness and loss of movement in the shoulder joint. At its worst, as the name implies, frozen shoulder can lead to complete loss of motion in the joint, as well as chronic pain. Even a partially frozen shoulder will still seriously reduce a person's range of mobility. Symptoms may last for a number of years, and a person's ability to work may be adversely affected over that period, especially where a job involves heavy or repetitive lifting.

Who Is Affected By Frozen Shoulder?

Those aged between 40 and 60 are at the highest risk of developing frozen shoulder, and perhaps surprisingly, around 70% of sufferers are women. Frozen shoulder normally affects the non-dominant side of the body, though the condition is likely to recur, with 40% of sufferers going on to develop the condition in their other shoulder. Often frozen shoulder can be traced to a previous shoulder injury that has caused prolonged immobility, and corresponding weakness in the shoulder capsule. Previous surgery on the shoulder may also cause a long-term weakness in the joint, increasingly the likelihood of frozen shoulder developing.

Typical Causes Of Frozen Shoulder

  • Fractures to the Humerus and Scapula Bones

  • Shoulder Dislocations

  • Strains, Sprains and Tears to Muscles, Tendons and Ligaments

  • Rotator Cuff Damage

  • Damage to Nerves and Blood Vessels
  • There is much speculation as to the exact causes of frozen shoulder, though fundamentally the condition is the result of a weakness in the shoulder capsule, or traumatic damage to the soft tissues. There may be a chain of injuries and disorders which ultimately cause the condition. A worker may injure their shoulder, and develop a musculo-skeletal disorder such as tendonitis or bursitis in the joint. Both these conditions reduce the mobility of the shoulder and cause the muscles, tendons and ligaments to degenerate. Frozen shoulder is highly likely to develop in these circumstances. Injuries to the rotator cuff (an important group of muscles and tendons in the shoulder) is also known to contribute to the development of frozen shoulder.

    Frozen Shoulder Caused By Work

Heavy, awkward and repetitive lifting tasks at work can all place excessive pressure on the shoulder joint causing sudden trauma, or gradual deterioration over time. An employer may be to blame for shoulder injuries among workers that cause frozen shoulder. Loads may be dangerously heavy, or workers may not be able manoeuvre properly in confined conditions. Training in safe lifting techniques must be provided to workers engaged in manual handling, and all lifting apparatus and safety equipment must be in good working order. Poor posture and repetitive shoulder movements have also been found to be factors in the ultimate development of frozen shoulder syndrome.
