Read our introduction to: Shoulder Injuries At Work >>
The shoulder is the most mobile, as well as the most regularly dislocated joint in the body. The range of movements that the shoulder can perform creates an inherent instability, and when ligaments are forcefully pulled and damaged they can no longer hold the ball and socket structure of the joint together. When a shoulder is dislocated, sudden force causes the head of the humerus bone to pop out of its socket. Surgery will initially attempt to get the ball back into the socket. Tendons, ligaments, muscles, nerves and blood vessels may all be damaged by a shoulder dislocation, and may require more complicated arthroscopic (key hole) surgery to repair.
The Effects Of A Shoulder Dislocation
A dislocated shoulder injury will require emergency hospital attention, due to possible further damage that displaced bones can cause. A doctor's priorities will be to reset and realign the bones, and immobilise the shoulder to allow it to heal. The normal recovery period for a dislocated shoulder is between 4 and 12 weeks. Pain, discomfort and lack of full mobility may still effect a person up to a year later however, and even longer where complicated surgery has been necessary. Studies furthermore show that around 50% of people will suffer a similar shoulder injury in the future, due to residual weakness in the joint. Long term shoulder conditions may also develop as a direct result of a dislocation, including frozen shoulder, which can cause complete loss of mobility and effective disability.
Dislocated Shoulder Injuries - Associated Problems
Dislocated Shoulder Injuries At Work
When a worker dislocates their shoulder, it is usually the result of a sudden traumatic injury, involving enough force to separate the humeral head from its socket. Falls at work regularly cause shoulder dislocations, as the physical trauma on hitting the ground is often borne by the hands and shoulders. Manual handling tasks including lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying may also cause dislocated shoulder injuries, particularly where weights are excessive or loads are awkward. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 details safe weights that may be handled by workers, while the Work at Height Regulations 2005 governs working at height. Either may be relevant for a person seeking compensation after having dislocated a shoulder at work through on fault of their own.

Dislocated Shoulder Injury Compensation Awards
Our lawyers are often asked; can I claim compensation for a dislocated shoulder caused by my work? The answer is usually yes, as legislation exists governing safety procedures that are the responsibility of an employer to implement and enforce. As dislocated shoulders mean employees have to take significant time off work we are regularly asked; how much compensation can I expect for my work related dislocated shoulder? The answer is that for a dislocated shoulder causing pain in the shoulder and neck, aching in elbow, sensory symptoms in the forearm and hand, and weakness of grip, compensation awards will range between £5,000 and £8,100. Where further ongoing disability is caused by a dislocated shoulder damages may exceed £30,000.
