Read About The Causes Of Accidents On Construction Sites >>

There are a wide variety of injury types and corresponding levels of severity that can affect construction workers. Injuries caused by falls from height, objects falling from height, slips and trips and contact with machinery are the most common. Falls from height account for over a third of construction accidents and result in injuries to the head, back, spine, arms, hands, wrists, legs, ankles and feet.

Compensation may range from £600 for a minor hand injury that heals within a few months, to £180,000 for an injury resulting in the loss of both legs. Compensation for a minor head injury ranges from £1,400 to £8,100. Where the brain or spinal cord is affected however compensation awards will be far higher. A severe back injury with associated side effects such as impaired bladder and bowel function can result in awards of up to £108,000. For males under the age of 30 (the most common group injured on construction sites), severe facial scarring will result in compensation awards between £19,000 and £42,000.

  • Building Site Accident Case Study 1

SITUATION: Mr Martin was hit in the face with a scaffolding tube whilst at work. He was employed as a labourer, working on a building site through an agency. It was his first day of working on that particular site. The person carrying the scaffolding tube did not notice Mr Martin as he rounded a corner, and hit the client in the face, resulting in a laceration to his upper lip and leaving a faint scar.

RESULT: Mr Martin was off work for 3 weeks following this accident. As he was an agency worker, he was not paid at all for this period. As he had a work related injury, he decided to bring a claim against the employer of the person who caused his accident on the building site. He contacted Bartletts Solicitors and asked; can I claim compensation for my injury on a building site? Our lawyer listened to the facts and offered him a no win no fee agreement for a construction site injury. The entire process did not cost him a penny. In little more than 9 months after Bartletts Solicitors first contacted the Defendant, Mr Martin's claim was settled and he received £2,250 compensation.

Building Site Accident Case Study 2

SITUATION: In December 2006 Mr Jones was working as a roof tiler on a building project in Bedfordshire. He was self employed and was sub contracted to work for the main builder on site. Mr Jones did not see a piece of polythene on the scaffolding that he was working on and he slipped. Luckily there were toe boards so Mr Jones did not fall off the scaffolding, but he did fall very awkwardly on his knee and suffered a very serious ligament tear.

RESULT: Mr Jones was off work for 12 weeks. Because he was a sub contractor and self employed, he did not get paid. Because Mr Jones worked for himself, he did not think that he would be able to claim. When he contacted our company he asked; how can I claim compensation for an accident on a construction site if I am self employed? We pointed that the main contractor had a duty to ensure that he was safe while working on the building site, and their failure to do so had led him to sustain a work related injury. They should have regularly checked the scaffolding to ensure that it was free from obstructions. They had failed to do so and were unable to provide proof of adequate inspections so Mr Jones' claim succeeded and he received compensation for his injuries and also his financial losses including his loss of earnings.
