The ankle joint is the point of intersection between the tibia and fibula bones, and the talus bone that connects the lower leg to the foot. The ankle provides the body with critical stability and mobility. Ankle injuries are common due to the stresses and strains placed on these joints in the course of every day life, and the complex and fragile structure of the ankle joints. The range of injuries that the ankle can sustain is broad, encompassing sprains, strains, dislocations, fractures and breaks. The ankle is also home to the critically important Achilles tendon, which if severed or badly damaged can result pain and disability equal to that caused by a severe fracture.

Types Of Ankle Injury

  • Sprained Ankle Injuries

  • Fractured Ankle Injuries

  • Achilles Tendon Damage
  • Causes Of Ankle Injuries At Work

The most common causes of ankle injuries at work are slips, trips and falls. These often occur in high pressure working environments and physically demanding professions, such as kitchens, factories and warehouses. The increased amount of cabling required in modern offices has increased the incidence of tripping accidents in most work environments, and a high proportion of these result in ankle sprains, fractures and soft tissue damage. Falls from height, off ladders, roofs or scaffolds for example, may cause ankle injuries where a person lands on their feet. In winter sprained and broken ankle injuries are common following slips on ice, and employers have a legal responsibility to deal effectively with the hazard posed by ice and snow.

  • Symptoms Of Ankle Injuries

It has been estimated that around 85% of ankle injuries involve inversion sprains, where the foot turns sharply inwards, stretching or tearing the ankle ligaments. Symptoms include sharp pain, swelling and internal bleeding causing discolouration of the joint. Where the ligament or tendon has been completely severed, an injured person will normally be rendered immobile for 2-3 months. With many moderate to severe ankle fractures, surgical intervention may be recommended by doctors, as it can speed up the healing process relative to wearing a plaster cast. Often plates, pins and screws will need to be inserted to realign the bones, and support them while they heal.

How Much Compensation For An Ankle Injury From Work?

The level of compensation for ankle injuries depends on the extent of the recovery made by the injured person, and any residual effects that remain. A sprain or ligament injury with residual effects, but short of disability, such as a tendency for the joint to give way, scarring, aching and discomfort will result in awards between £3,500 and £8,750. Where a person experiences residual problems walking on uneven ground or difficulty managing stairs, ankle injury compensation awards will range between £8,500 and £17,000. Severe ankle injuries will require extensive treatment and / or a long period of immobility. There will be ongoing instability in the joint, and other factors may include a residual limp and regular sleep disturbance. Ankle injury compensation awards in this category range between £20,000 and £32,000.
